Rogojel, Apuseni

A village at the foot of Vlădeasa, in the heart of the Apuseni Mountains.

The village

Rogojel, at the foot of Vlădeasa

Rogojel is a small village in the commune of Săcuieu, tucked away at the foot of Vlădeasa Peak, in the heart of the Apuseni Mountains. The houses line the hillside among orchards and hay meadows, and the spruce forest begins right at the edge of the last homestead. Here time flows differently: to the rhythm of the seasons, of the animals and of work in the fields.

The people here still bake bread in wood ovens, mow the hay by scythe and know how to tell stories by the fire in the evening. You will hear cowbells on the hill, springs running between the stones and, at night, a silence the city forgot long ago.

We chose Rogojel for exactly this — for its unpretended authenticity, for the vast forests and for the feeling of being far from everything, without truly being far from anything.

The seasons

Four faces of the same mountain

Rogojel has a different charm in every season. Here is what to expect when you choose the moment of your escape.

Spring

The forests wake up, the springs swell, and the meadows fill with flowers. It is the time for long hikes, with the air still cool and the trails almost entirely your own.

Summer

Long days and mountain coolness even in July. Mornings with mist over the valleys, afternoons for the ridges and long evenings by the fire, under a sky full of stars.

Autumn

The most beautiful season in the Apuseni. The forests burn in ochre and copper, the air is crystal clear, and the quiet settles over the village with the first frosty mornings.

Winter

Clean snow, smoke from the chimneys and complete silence. A time for snowshoe hikes, warm tea and long hours by the fireplace.

Good to know

A few practical things

So you arrive relaxed and make the most of your days in the mountains, here is what is worth knowing in advance.

The access road

The last kilometres to Rogojel are on forest and country roads. In summer any car can make it, taking it slowly; in winter we recommend winter tyres and, in heavy snow, higher ground clearance.

Signal and internet

Phone signal works, but varies from one spot in the village to another. We have internet at the cabins, but we encourage you to use it sparingly — you came here precisely to disconnect.

Supplies and meals

In the village you will find the essentials at the local shop. For bigger shopping, stop in Huedin or Cluj before heading up. The local producers can supply you with cheese, honey and homemade preserves.

What to bring

Good hiking shoes, layers of clothing (mountain weather changes quickly), a rain jacket, a headlamp and a reusable bottle for spring water.

Season and bookings

We are open all year. Autumn weekends and the winter holidays fill up quickly, so it is worth booking early.

Quiet, adults only

Vatra Village is a place dedicated to quiet and disconnection, for adults only. Travelling with a pet? Ask us first — we want it to be right both for you and for the other guests.
